Unix Timestamps Explained

Unix time tracks time as a running count of seconds elapsed since 00:00:00 UTC on January 1, 1970 (the Unix Epoch).

Seconds vs Milliseconds

  • Seconds (10 digits): 1770000000 (Standard Unix Epoch)
  • Milliseconds (13 digits): 1770000000000 (Used in JavaScript Date.now())

When converting timestamps, check the digit count to ensure your dates don't accidentally display in the year 1970 or 52000!
